Brighella
Brighella is a very cynical and sarcastic character. For an audience, he is witty, humorous and deceitful. He will do anything to grab some extra dough, even if it requires him "selling his sister". He is a cunning liar and on several occasions, bursts out in angry rants when something doesn't go his way.
This stock character is the head servant of his household - though he'll try to boss around the zanni of other households too! Usually a proprietor of a shop, he is never wealthy but is better off than the others. When he does work for someone, it is only as a path for his own personal gain and he will change his supposed loyalties at any time. He's a jack-of-all-trades, capable of doing any kind of job - or so he'll offer. He knows enough about anything that will help to make his con. He is never a victim, so his status, although slightly low, is always secure. In addition he offers, and is asked to give advice to The Lovers because of his almost sentimental view of love.
He is crafty, sneaky, and clever in his intrigues. He can easily outsmart most of the other characters, including (especially?) his boss. And he uses this to his advantage. He is always scheming, looking to swindle some profit or better himself. He will exploit every weakness and promise to fulfill any desire of the other Masks and most are both foolish enough to believe in him. To accomplish all his plots, Brighella is a very charismatic character.
Brighella’s costume is suitably picaresque. The half mask of olive green with licentious eyes and a hooked nose is found atop a rakish cavalier’s mustache and a black shaggy beard. His jacket and full trousers are striped with green braid, and he wears a short cloak, a green bordered toque, and yellow shoes and belt; he carried a dagger that later became a wooden prop and a large leather purse.
Brighella's weight is placed on a bent leg. The other is extended, lightly touching the ground. His elbows are up with his hands spread out. Whether or not he is moving, his feet are constantly moving, dancing back and forth. It is a very soft walk, similar to tip-toeing, the difference being that his legs are spread.
